So... What happened in 2008?

I didn't think it was possible for me to do at this time, but I broke last years record, and played 110 dj-gigs throughout 2008! A lot of these gigs were at usual clubs and bars in Copenhagen like Stengade30, Ideal Bar, Saxons etc., but I also held parties down strong at larger venues like Docken, Kødboderne 18, M/S Stubnitz, Kupé, Nakkefestival and the Copenhagen Central Square. Add to that 3 mixtape-releases and more than 40 hours of radioshow this year, and you a have a pretty busy dj.

I am not doing an annual list, but I would like to give credit where it is due, so here are some crews and events that stands out for me:

(-) The Copenhagen party massive has REALLY been picking up on the dubstep vibe lately, to my great anticipation. A lot of artist and dj's are pushing the sound, and if this sound hasn't infected you yet, I will advise you to check out my dubstep mixtape series, links available on my profile.

(-) OHOI! has once again this year delivered rock solid 12"-releases on their dubstep imprint Kraken Recordings, as well as quality bookings from top-a-top UK artist. I played dubstep sets for packed dancefloors at their party, and alongside the OHOI!-dj's at various venues.

(-) New bassboys on the block Wobble Squad arranged and promoted some nasty events this year, especially 'Nørrebro Rules' and the 'Dubplate Studio Support Party' were off the hook! I spinned vinyl and dubplates at both events, which drawed more than 500 people each.

(-) Some young firesouls decided to put work into making the danish edition of Pecha Kucha organised and widely promoted. This led to me spinning vinyls at their summerparty at Docken and perform in collaboration with the author Johan Knattrup, this fall at Brorsons Church.

(-) As natural progression against playing even more upfront tunes, I started getting dubplates and specials cutted for my liveshows. This has really enhanced my oppurtunities about the music I select. Unfortunately that service is not yet available in Denmark, but some cool underground fellows decided to start up a cutting room, which hopefully will be ready soon!

Nominated for Danish DeeJay Awards 2008

Hello again

Just a short blog to let you know that I am one out of five nominees, in the category "Danish Urban Deejay Of The Year" at Danish DeeJay Awards 2008 (ddja.dk). A Simpsons quote comes to mind: "Someone somewhere thinks I am better than somebody else!"

As I am informed; I have been nominated by a couple hundred different danish dj's, who nominate in about twenty categories. Check out all of the nominees here. I am not really sure on how the voting process goes down, but the winners will be publicly announced at a big awardsshow 23rd of March @ Tapperihallerne near Tuborg Harbour.

So... what happened in 2007?

What a year! You might have noticed, that I have been working even harder expanding my dj-business this year. It has resulted in 100 dj-gigs in Denmark & Sweden, plus 3 mixtape-releases throughout 2007, but this will only be the beginning... I have been collaborating with crews like MidWeekBrakes, Polka! & GAM3 Streetbasket, and was headhunted to play large venues like Rust & Vega Nightclub, as well as a couple of crazy weddings :)
I do also have some great news for 2008, which will be revealed within a month from now.


I am still not into doing annual lists of everything, but I would like to sum up some of the stuff, that for me stands as extrordinary during this year:

(-) The dubstep movement actually caught me in 2006, but since then this bass-style has grown BIG and continues to occupy my attention even more. I just did a count; in one year I have bought more than 150 dubstep records! I am still pretty excited on this style of music, and if it hasn't infected you yet, I will advise you to check out the strictly dubstep mixtape, I'll be putting out in the spring of 2008.

(-) Copenhagen based soundsystem/eventcrew OHOI!, established their dubstep label "Kraken Recordings", which delivered three well-anticipated and critically acclaimed 12" featuring prime tracks from the danish part of the scene. I expect more rock-solid releases from this quality imprint, including a special remix of a local dancehall legend, who some of you might know about... :)

(-) Their debut album has been delayed a couple of times already, and is now more anticipated than ever: the Boom Clap Bachelors are finally released their album on danish chill-out label Music For Dreams. I have been repping different versions of this album since the summer of 2006, but I have just received the finished promo copy, and expect it to blow up very soon.

(-) Some of the best parties in 2007 where thrown by the infamous Polka! crew. They resided all over Copenhagen, and held quality events featuring some of the local dj-stars; playing funk, soul & worldly electronics. This fall they booked me to spin fresh balkan at Polka! part 5, alongside Soulsystemet & Alberta In Love @ Global near Saint Hans Square in center of multiethnic Nørrebro quarter.

(-) This electronic balkan scene I have been exploring in depth during the year, is an excuisite form of party music. Unknown to the massive, but will anyway make your feet move, due to the incredibly catchy melodies. For me; there is also something very special about the harmonies, which tells a lot of balkan history.

Summer’s ending...

Well, the summer in Copenhagen was apparently over before it even got started. Although I managed to host a Crash-party and a roof-party, in collaboration with some hard working people, during the short periods of dry weather. And big-ups to the GAM3-team who had me spinning hiphop at the Copenhagen Central Square, at this seasons last event; the GAM3 Finals.

I was also given the oppurtunity of performing alongside an incredible line-up at the Unfair Fashion party, and close down the last regular wednesday-MWB at Vega this summer. I am still rolling with MidWeekBrakes, and I can inform you that there is a MWB Special coming up. So I would advise you to put a mark on 3rd of November, which among other things, will be the release party for my recently finished project, the "7 Sessions Mixtape". The cover is now ready, and the cd-copies will be distributed before you know it.

A call I received in the late summer days, offered me a job as a part-time teacher on the dj-course for the regional youth school, the project is called NuArt. Building on my earlier experience as lecturer and instructor, I turned the challenge on. So from the next month on and half a year forward, I am going to educate teenagers on the basics of dj'ing and sounddesign. What a great oppurtunity to pass on my self-taught abilities to some inner city kids. :)

I expanded my balkan soundexperience further, by going record digging in Romania. This trip was great relaxation, but indeed also enlightning on the social and cultural situation in the balkans. Apart from the radio, I had a hard time finding fresh music and record stores. As a local dj put it for me: "There is no record shops here in Bucharest, down here we STEAL our music from the internet!". I proved him wrong, and brought home a bunch of old, but nearly mint vinyls, which are currently in my dj-bag.
So if you wanna shake your legs to some eastern influenced tunes, catch me at RUC Årsfest this friday, or the Egmont dorm this saturday.
